Another Splash Of Colour - New Psychedelia In Britain 1980-1985 - Various Artists

Another Splash Of Colour - New Psychedelia In Britain 1980-1985
ANOTHER SPLASH OF COLOUR is the first compilation to document the Psychedelic Revival which hit the British music scene in the first half of the Eighties.

This 3-CD set expands upon an original V/A LP, A Splash Of Colour, issued by WEA at the start of 1982 and including many of the Nu Psych scene’s major players: Mood Six, High Tide, Miles Over Matter, The Barracudas and The Times. All the musical tracks from this landmark album now appear on CD for the very first time!

ANOTHER SPLASH OF COLOUR transforms the LP into a 64-track compendium spanning the years 1980-1985, from the roots of the psychedelic revival in post-punk and the mod revival through to the much-publicised London scene based around club nights like the Groovy Cellar and onto its second revival of sorts in 1984/85 with the early releases on Creation Records and the popularity of the Alice In Wonderland club.

All the key artists are included, from Nick Nicely to the Liverpool contingent (Icicle Works, Julian Cope) to The Soft Boys and solo (Robyn Hitchcock, Kimberley Rew), the Whaam! camp (TV Personalities, The Times, Direct Hits, Marble Staircase, Le Mat), early Creation Records tunes (the Revolving Paint Dream, the Jasmine Minks, Biff Bang Pow!) and the Psych scene’s eventual chart-toppers Doctor & The Medics (with a previously unreleased track!).

Many of the Mod Revival bands who evolved into Psychedelia are represented: Purple Hearts, Squire, The Jetset, The Heartbeats, The Onlookers and The Vandells. ASOC even boasts a bona fide hit single in Scarlet Party’s Byrdsy favourite ‘101 Dam-Nations’.

Punk/new wave artists also turned their hand to making Psych records: The UK Subs’ Charlie Harper, The Damned under the guise of Naz Nomad & The Nightmares (and Captain Sensible solo), Elvis Costello’s backing band The Attractions. ·

The deluxe clamshell package includes a weighty booklet with a 9,000-word sleeve-note by ex-NME journalist and author Neil Taylor. ·

As well as boasting many rarities new to CD (The Third Eye, Firmament & The Elements, Pink Umbrellas, Magic Mushroom Band, etc.), some tracks are previously unissued. ·

ANOTHER SPLASH OF COLOUR follows other acclaimed Cherry Red genre box sets which have attracted enthusiastic reviews and healthy sales: Looking Back/Keep Lookin’, Dust On The Nettles, Scared To Get Happy, C86, Millions Like Us, Love Poetry & Revolution, etc.

Looking Back 80 Mod, Freakbeat & Swinging London Nuggets
A mammoth eighty-track compendium of the finest (mostly) British Mod sounds of the 60s, housed in a Clambox with a 48-page booklet. Looking Back boasts a smattering of previously unissued gems from the likes of A Wild Uncertainty, Tony Rivers& The Castaways, The Thoughts, The Trekkas and The Knave.

Many tracks are new to CD, including nuggets from the Lloyd Alexander Real Estate (who later became Audience), and soul obscurities from Maynell Wilson, Hoagy Benson and Watson T. Brown & Explosive. Looking Back is compiled and annotated by Paul Weller biographer and long-time Mod observer John Reed and designed by Andy Morten (Shindig magazine, Rev-Ola).

Many of the rarities here are drawn from cult British labels such as Planet, Ember and Chapter One. Other obscurities were only issued abroad (The Sorrows, The Alan Bown Set). Many of the artists, such as Arthur Brown and The Groundhogs, went on to enjoy huge success. The Valentines, for example, were fronted by a pre-AC/DC Bon Scott!

SCARED TO GET HAPPY (A Story Of Indie Pop 1980-1989) is the first box set ever to document the explosion of Indie Pop in Britain across the 1980s. Compiled in loosely chronological fashion, the five CDs chart Indie Pop’s development from the post punk era and the dominance of Scottish bands through to its genre-defining C86 period and onto the end of the decade, with the arrival of Madchester and the shoegazing sound.

Inspired by the Nuggets compilations, the box set boasts 134 tracks spanning the Eighties, drawn from all the key labels of the period – Creation, Factory, Cherry Red, Rough Trade, Sarah, Subway Organisation, Zoo, Kitchenware, Pink, Chapter 22, In Tape, Medium Cool, Lazy, Dreamworld, 53rd & 3rd, Ron Johnson, el, Vindaloo, Red Rhino, Food, etc.

Many of the bands later tasted mainstream success: Primal Scream, Aztec Camera, Stone Roses, Pulp, the Wonder Stuff, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, the Inspiral Carpets, the Soup Dragons, the Wedding Present, James, the La’s, del Amitri, the Primitives, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Prefab Sprout, the Shamen, Cud, the Bluebells, Black, the House Of Love, Strawberry Switchblade, Pop Will Eat Itself, the Darling Buds, Fuzzbox, That Petrol Emotion, the Railway Children, Jamie Wednesday (as Carter USM), the Milltown Brothers and the Boo Radleys.

The box set boasts a stylish 54-page booklet with a lengthy sleeve-note detailing each track and illustrations of the records and bands involved.

A few tracks (Strawberry Switchblade, Soup Dragons, Bluebells, Close Lobsters, etc.) have never officially been released before. Many others are extremely rare and make their debut on CD.

SCARED TO GET HAPPY will be promoted by a mini-festival at London’s 229 club on June 22nd, with an impressive roster: the Primitives, the BMX Bandits, the Brilliant Corners, the June Brides, Mighty Mighty, the Wolfhounds, the Popguns, 14 Iced Bears, the Blue Orchids and Yeah Yeah Noh.

Saint Etienne Presents: Songs For A London Winter
Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs have ransacked their record collections, with a helping hand from DJ Martin Green, to give you the sound of Piccadilly in December – baubles, bangles, tinsel and whisky macs. This is a decidedly London selection – Joe Henderson's ‘Sleighride’ has the distinct feel of Hampstead Heath rather than Lapland.

Homegrown rockers like Billy Fury and Adam Faith are found rubbing shoulders over a Christmas pint with John Barry and jazzers Kenny Baker and John Dankworth. Tricia Marks and Lyn Cornell provide festive glamour.

Saint Etienne member and pop historian Bob Stanley writes the sleevenotes. This is a soundtrack for the Hamley's shop window and a proper 60s UK time capsule.

•    All UK recordings
•    The latest in the hugely successful 'Saint Etienne Presents' series.
•    Many tracks on CD for the first time
•    Not the same old Christmas songs!

Please Note: This title is released November 24 and will not be dispatched before this date.
