REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL PARLOPHONE MASTER TAPES

Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of a newly re-mastered and expanded 2 CD edition of the classic 1968 self-titled album by MIKE McGEAR & ROGER McGOUGH. A joyous potpourri of late 60s psychedelic rock, poetry and humour, McGOUGH & McGEAR is a highly sought after album from a free thinking era in British culture.

As members of Liverpool comic poetry group The Scaffold, Roger McGough and Mike McGear (a pseudonym adopted by Mike McCartney – brother of Paul) had signed to Parlophone Records in 1966 and had begun working with producer George Martin. The McGOUGH & McGEAR album was the result of recording sessions at various studios in London in 1967. Paul McCartney assisted in the production of the record and a host of well-known musicians guested on the sessions, albeit uncredited. Alongside Mike’s elder brother, the musicians included such luminaries as JIMI HENDRIX, GRAHAM NASH, DAVE MASON (Traffic), JOHN MAYALL, SPENCER DAVIS, PAUL SAMWELL SMITH (Yardbirds) and VIV PRINCE (Pretty Things).

Even in those enlightened and experimental times, the sheer diversity of styles on the album was notable. From the psychedelia of ‘So Much’ and ‘Ex-Art Student’ (both featuring Jimi Hendrix on guitar) to the poetry of ‘Summer With Monika’ and the satire of ‘Little Bit of Heaven’, McGOUGH & McGEAR is a joyous listening experience. The album’s reputation (and impressive cast of contributors) has led to the original vinyl albums changing hands for huge sums of money.

This Esoteric Recordings edition has been re-mastered from the original master tapes and features both the stereo mix and the mono mix of the album over two CDs for the very first time. The reissue restores the original album artwork and liner notes by Beatles’ biographer Hunter Davies and also features a new essay with an exclusive and extensive interview with Mike (McGear) McCartney.

N.B: This title is released 5th February 2016 and will not be dispatched before this date.

Planes / Never Even Thought
Colin Blunstone made his name with the legendary 1960s band The Zombies, who are still active to this day.

After leaving The Zombies, Colin embarked on a long and successful solo career, enjoying hits such as ‘Say You Don’t Mind’ and ‘I Don’t Believe In Miracles’.

Planes (1976) and Never Even Thought (1978) were recorded for Elton John’s Rocket Records label and – amazingly – have never been released on CD.

Both albums have been remastered from the original quarter-inch tapes.

Planes was produced by Gus Dudgeon and opens with ‘Beautiful You’ and the Elton John-penned title track, both of which were chosen as singles. It also boasts a reworking of The Zombies’ classic, ‘(Care Of) Cell 44’ and a third single, Kiki Dee’s ‘Loving And Free’.

Never Even Thought begins with the lead single, Richard Kerr’s ‘I’ll Never Forget You’; the other tracks chosen as 45s were ‘Ain’t It Funny’ and ‘Photograph’. Rod Argent guests on the album.

N.B: This title is released 28th August 2015 and will not be dispatched before this date.

The Ray Conniff Hi-Fi Companion
"If you believe in your art, and you love what you do, that energy will go out, and people will respond." Ray Conniff

One of the best trombonists of the big band era - he played with Bunny Berigan and Artie Shaw - Ray Conniff burst onto the 1950s scene with recordings based on the tonal combination of mixed choir with the swing of the big band. This blend of musical colours and textures - women's voices and trumpets, men's voices and trombones - was organised with a geometric precision and really caught the public ear. His debut album "'S Wonderful”, inhabited the USA Top 20 for nine months.

His breakthrough had come in 1956, with his arrangement for Don Cherry's hit ballad ‘Band Of Gold.’ Conniff substituted a chorus of voices for a string section; they were wordless, purely instrumental, smooth, and an instant success. He went on to arrange many hits for the likes of Guy Mitchell, Marty Robbins, Johnnie Ray and Rosemary Clooney before Columbia gave him the chance to record with his own orchestra.

Conniff, in fact, founded two groups: his "Orchestra and Chorus" and his "Singers." The former was a typical big band line-up of saxes, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm section and a chorus of four men and four women. The latter was a chorus of 25 singers - 12 women and 13 men - with minimal instrumental backing.

Originally released as a double album in 1958, "Hi-Fi Companion” is a perfect little mid-century time capsule, a hip, swinging, urban, yet reassuring showcase of vintage Conniff and his inimitable arrangements of some of the most popular songs of the era.

It has been said that If Mantovani is the epitome of elevator music, Ray Conniff is the epitome of super-market music. For the public who would buy 70 million copies of his albums and give him 25 straight Top 40 LPs during the 1950s and 1960s, the "Ray Conniff Sound" defined easy-listening; a phenomenon which became a fixed star on the horizon of pop music.
