Dark Matter/Dark Energy - Membranes

Dark Matter/Dark Energy
ALSO AVAILABLE:

Fronted by charismatic singer John Robb, the Membranes formed in the wake of Punk in Blackpool in 1977.

Membranes made a huge impact on the post-punk scene of the 1980s, with John Robb also establishing himself as a music journalist of note. John Peel was a huge supporter and bands as disparate as Mercury Rev, My Bloody Valentine and Big Black have cited them as an influence.

After Membranes folded, John returned to the stage with Sensurround and most notably Goldblade, before rekindling Membranes a few years ago.

Dark Matter/Dark Energy is the first Membranes album since 1989. It’s awash with their off-kilter mix of angular post-punk adventure, Krautrock-ish soundscapes and edginess.

The album is inspired by a conversation with Joe Incandela, the head of the CERN project about the Higgs Boson particle (Joe is on one of the tracks). It’s all about the life and death of the universe; during recording, John Robb's father died and the album is also about him.

The album is preceded by a Record Store Day 7” of the musical juggernaut that is ‘Do The Supernova’.

Original Albums Collection: 5CD Clamshell Box Set Edition
Since the dawn of time, psychobilly originators and figureheads The Meteors have set the standard for the angry blend of rockabilly, punk and dirty sci-fi horror blues that continues to find new fans around the world. Beloved of bikers, punks, rockabillies, goths, rockers, cowgirls and indie boys alike for over thirty years, the gaggle of pissed off boys who emerged from a succession of London rockabilly bands as the grim 70s lurched into the 80s has slowly mutated into a worldwide phenomenon, legends in their own lifetime and Godfathers of a scene that refused to die.

This set – comprising five studio albums originally released between 1984 and 1988 – captures the band in their heyday, pummelling their way through seventy five album tracks, single mixes and b-sides. Packaged in individual LP sleeve replica wallets and a hard clamshell box, these records are ripe for rediscovery and re-examination, as is the psychobilly movement as a whole.

➢    5 Albums originally released in 1984-1988
➢    Plus bonus tracks – single mixes and b-sides
➢    LP sleeve replica wallets
➢    Booklet contains sleevenotes, relevant single sleeve packshots etc

The Meteors continue to play live to rabid crowds and will be performing around Europe and Russia this Autumn:

Oh Happy England
"A mix of old testament preacher and Captain Beefheart. There's a touch of Tom Waits and Nick Cave in there too..." (jazzman.com)

· "Bird Radio is ‘future medieval’, as if J.G. Ballard had written The Wicker Man”. Steve Chandra Savale, Asian Dub Foundation

· "Bird Radio is a flute-toting, bass drum-beating sensation... A must-see live act.” Rick Pearson, Evening Standard

· "Oh, Happy England” is a collection of fourteen song settings of poems by British writer Walter de la Mare. Bird Radio developed this album with the active support of Aldeburgh Music where he composed and recorded the songs on residency with an ensemble of voice, flute, piano, cello, guitar, bass and percussion. Bird Radio states, "when you enter into a poem by Walter de la Mare, you are never certain of the boundaries between reality and dream. His poetry covers a broad spectrum of textures and emotions from moments of realisation and self-recognition as in "The Englishman" to dark, isolated and nightmarish scenes such as in "Drugged” and reveries such as in "Time Passes".

· With the blessing of Walter de la Mare’s grandson Giles, folklorist/musician/curator Sam Lee and a mentoring programme with the new London initiative Meet The Artist.

· Bird Radio has performed his dark-folk music on independent and BBC radio as well as performances across the UK, Russia, Europe and the United States.

· Oh, Happy England is released in a matt finish limited edition digi-pack with a 20page booklet designed by Italian artist Chiara Ambrosio.

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly re-mastered and expanded edition of the classic 1969 album "Battersea Power Station” by JUNIOR’s EYES. The band was the concept of guitarist MICK WAYNE (previously with The Outsiders who included Jimmy Page in their ranks) and latterly with Psychedelic outfit The Tickle.

After the break-up of the Tickle, Mick Wayne formed Junior's Eyes in early 1968, initially with drummer John 'Candy' Carr and then with John 'Honk' Lodge (bass) and Steve Chapman (drums). They soon recorded a debut single with the help of pianist Rick Wakeman and producer Tony Visconti. The unit evolved with singer Graham 'Grom' Kelly and organist John Redfern in late 1968 and began work on an album. Battersea Power Station was released in June 1969 and was a landmark work, featuring a continuous suite of songs on the album’s first side and individual songs forming the flip side. It is now rightly regarded as a classic album of the period. Junior’s Eyes have also entered into the annals of rock history through their association with DAVID BOWIE.

In June 1969 Mick Wayne and Rick Wakeman were among the guest musicians who recorded Bowie’s "Space Oddity” single and for Bowie’s subsequent album a new line-up of Junior's Eyes comprising Mick Wayne (guitar), John 'Honk' Lodge (bass), John Cambridge (drums) and Tim Renwick (guitar, flute, recorder) comprised Bowie’s backing band.

Newly re-mastered from the original tapes, this 2 disc expanded edition of "Battersea Power Station” includes 14 bonus tracks, (2 previously unreleased), drawn from singles and a previously unreleased BBC session from October 1968.
